Die nachstehenden Ausführungen sind im wesentlichen die Wiedergabe eines Vortrags, den ich am I5. April I9I4 auf der Versammlung der Freunde der Christlichen Welt in Nürnberg gehalten habe. Der Vortrag ist in seiner ursprünglichen Form in der »Christlichen Welt« Nr. 30, 3I, 32 vom 23. Juli, 30. Juli, 6. August I9I4 erschienen und damals, wie es nicht anders sein konnte, in dem großen und erschütternden Geschehen untergegangen. Ich hatte die Absicht, die hier kurz angedeuteten Erscheinungsformen des religiösen Wahrheitsanspruchs auf (...) breiter Grundlage an den verschiedenen großen geschichtlichen Typen aufzuzeigen; dazu bin ich heute außer-stande. Aber die Frage selbst zu stellen und die möglichen Wege ihrer Beantwortung zu zeigen, erscheint mir heute erst recht notwendig. Nähere Beschäftigung mit der Phänomenologie, zu der mich die Kriegsjahre in seltsamer Verknüpfung geführt haben, konnte mir nur das Recht und die Notwendigkeit einer solchen Untersuchung bestätigen, die man heute vielleicht eine phänomenologische zu nennen geneigt wäre. Den Gedankengang mit gelehrten Auseinandersetzungen zu belasten, verbot der knappe in diesem Band zur Verfügung stehende Raum. (shrink)

This edition of previously unpublished correspondence from the archive of the New York Union Theological Seminary between young Charles Augustus Briggs and his teacher Isaak August Dorner dates from the second half of the 19th century. It offers insight into the transnational idea flow and interconfessional exchange on the understanding of theology. The paper deals with the first book-length materialist treatise published in Germany in the 1770s, August Wilhelm Hupel’s Anmerkungen und Zweifel über die gewöhnlichen Lehrsätze vom Wesen der menschlichen und der thierischen Seele. Based on a “great chain of being” conception, he maintains that his materialist doctrine provides stronger grounds for belief in the immortality of the soul than those substance dualism has offered. He seeks to defend that the soul is a composite being, i.e. that it is (...) material, but at the same time he argues that the soul is not identical with the body or parts of it, but rather that it exists independently and composed of “subtle”, ether-like matter. Hupel also argues that the soul is immortal. This claim is particularly uncommon since most materialists, not only in Germany, subscribe to some version of mortalism, i.e. the doctrine that the mind either ceases to exist altogether with the death of the body, or that it remains in a death-like state until the resurrection.
